Custom and Modern Furniture: Handmade in Wausau, Wisconsin
Welcome to the website for Graham Coulson Furniture. My aim is to create modern, handmade furniture from solid woods that utilize it's natural qualities to create forms of function and beauty. My inspiration comes from modernist and mid-century designers, and I apply handcrafted techniques in order to produce designs relevant to today and will become treasured pieces for tomorrow. I can work with you directly to produce a uniquely designed piece, or you can select an item from inventory.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
WorkshopMy workshop is based at the old schoolhouse for the township of Guenther which is south of Wausau. It was built around 1915, this photograph was taken shortly after that. After being sold by the school district in the 60's it fell into disrepair until the previous owner started renovation work in 2005. We bought it in 2011 with some major restorative projects complete but still with a long way to go. | MissionThe aim of Graham Coulson Furniture is to produce high quality modern furniture made from solid wood. MaterialsI prefer to use native species that can be sourced locally. My most commonly used woods are walnut, cherry, black ash and maple. I choose all my wood personally and ensure that each panel I make has the best figure and balance that can be achieved. | FinishesMy finish of choice for most woods is Danish oil. It is a traditional woodworking finish that provides a hard wearing, water resistant satin finish. On darker woods it really brings out the beauty of the grain. On lighter woods I prefer water based polyurethane as it does not darken the wood. | ShippingMy preferred choice is to use Greyhound which surprises a lot of people. I have found them to be cost effective and reliable. The down sides are that you will have to pick the item up from the nearest depot and that they cannot guarantee a delivery date but it is normally between 7-10 days. Home delivery is available via either UPS or Fedex but there is an extra cost incurred. |
