You can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Recently I got a commission to make some tables for a local church community center. The wood was harvested by a member of the congregation. The design was by a local interior designer Logan Erickson. Turning the rough cut lumber into dimensioned boards has been time consuming, repetative and brutal on my tools. It's taken about 15 8ft boards to make the four tables. Initially the design was going to be a single piece. I thought that unless the congregation were all weightlifters a 4ft square table make from 1 1/2 oak might not be the most practical. For one I doubt it would be leaving my shop. A modular table consisting of four smaller tables was settled on.
